A Master Technician who joined the Volkswagen group 25 years ago is looking forward to getting back to his hobbies when he retires at the end of this month.
John Fountain, aged 63, joined the brand in 1981, and for the last six years has led the technicians at Redditch Volkswagen on Washford Drive. Redditch Volkswagen is part of Trust Group UK which also has Volkswagen sites in Wolverhampton and Stourbridge.
“I’m really looking forward to spending some quality time with my wife when I retire, getting out and about together and enjoying ourselves,” said John.
“I’ve got a motorbike in the garage which I might renovate, and it would be good to have the free time to continue with my hobbies.”
John was born and bred in Redditch, and on leaving school found himself an apprenticeship with day release into the work place. During his career he climbed the ladder as he saw the motor industry change. After spending 20 years driving into the centre of Birmingham, he was delighted to join Redditch Volkswagen in 2010, and happy to finish his career in his home town.
“The industry has changed so much in even the last 10 years,” said John. “My advice to young people looking for a career in the motor industry would be to study hard at school and develop an interest and understanding in electronics and computers. It’s a tremendous career, but the new starters who succeed will be those young people who understand the technicalities of the industry.”
After sales manager at Redditch Volkswagen, Simon Warman, said: “We will miss John - and his many years of accumulated knowledge and experience for the Volkswagen brand will be hard replace. But he has earned his retirement and we wish him well.”
Redditch Volkswagen offers new and approved used car sales as well as a comprehensive aftercare service.
