Wolverhampton - Stourbridge - Redditch

The ID.R has been travelling the globe taking on notorious track records and smashing them to pieces to show that e-mobility and electric vehicles can be truly powerful. The ID.R now holds records on Pikes Peak, Goodwood Festival of Speed and the electric lap record on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

The team behind the ID.R and have been looking at various other challenges that they can embark on to really push the all-electric race car to its limits. In March, Volkswagen unveiled that it was going to take on a challenge in China and set the first record for any vehicle on the track.

The aim of the ID.R was to tackle the 10.9km mountain climb with 99 hairpin bends some of which have a small radius of just six meters.  The target time for the team was to set a record of just 7 minutes and 58 seconds.

With little information available and testing, ID.R driver and record holder, Romain Dumas had a difficult task ahead of him.  Much like the previous record-breaking runs, the ID.R and Romain Dumas tore up the asphalt and set a brand new record of 7;38.585 as it raced up the Tiamen Mountain and passed flag at “Heaven’s Gate” to set a new official record for the track. This is the new benchmark for others to tackle and highlights the power and performance that electric vehicles are more than capable of achieving.

We can’t wait to see what challenges that Romain Dumas and the ID.R motorsport team will take on next in their role as ambassadors for Volkswagens upcoming ID range of fully electric vehicles. In the meantime, the Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback is set to get its official world premiere at the Frankfurt motor show on September 10th.
