The ID.3 was the start of the Volkswagen electric revolution and with it now hitting the streets, it is time to look at the next step in the electric revolution. Unveiled during a special online premier, Volkswagen has introduced us to a brand new all-electric SUV, the ID.4.
The ID.4 has been under wraps for a little while now, but with it finally making its premiere we can unveil the details of the latest entry in the Volkswagen SUV range and the all-electric ID range.
The ID.4 will be Volkswagen’s first fully-electric SUV that has been produced with a carbon-neutral balance and will generate zero local emissions. The ID.4 will feature a range of battery options including a battery capable of storing 77kWh of energy (net) which can deliver a range of up to 323 miles on a single charge (based on current WLTP).
Performance-wise the ID.4 features, an electric drive motor positioned at the rear axle which generates 150kW (204PS) of power. As a result, the ID.4 can accelerate from 0 to 60 in 8.5 seconds and deliver a top speed of approximately 100mph. Having rear-wheel drive and 21cm of ground clearance the ID.4 is perfectly equipped to take on gentle off-road terrain as well.
Built upon the Volkswagen’s modular electric drive (MEB) architecture and featuring smooth curves and driving lines, the ID.4 is 4.58 meters long, ensuring there is plenty of interior space for additional comfort and a range of technological features that make the ID.4 standout.
Inside, the traditional gear stick has been removed and integrated into the smart steering wheel functionality that combined with two touch screen displays and the brand new “Hello ID” voice control functionality.
The latest version of the new ID.Light system which supports drivers intuitively has been positioned under the windscreen. This is combined with the new optional augmented reality heads-up display which works in conjunction with the virtual cockpit screens. This includes being able to display navigation arrows onto the road ahead of you giving visual instructions such as when to switch lanes or when to turn off from their current.
ID.4’s exterior has been given that ultra-modern appearance with clear flowing curves that not only look great but also provide good aerodynamics producing a drag coefficient of 0.28. Whenever a driver approaches the ID.4 with their keys, the lights will electrically swivel upwards from the bottom to thus welcome them by looking up.
With the Keyless Advanced access system onboard, the ID.4 also features an enhanced welcome scenario: in this case, the light modules “open their eyes” and then additionally swivel to the side – making the impression that the vehicle is seeking eye contact with the approaching driver. Which we all agree is a cool feature and highlights the combination of new technologies centered around drivers of the Volkswagen ID range. There is still so much more to see of the ID.4 in the run-up to its launch next year.
