The all-electric Volkswagen ID R racing car is an impressive piece of motorsport engineering.  Eleven months ago, the Volkswagen I.D. R made history when it broke the Pikes Peak record for an electric vehicle. Its performance was so impressive it even bettered Sébastien Loeb’s all-time record by a full 16 seconds. The new record of 7 minutes and 57.148 seconds was not only impressive for an electric vehicle but the I.D. R broke the all-time record for the hill climb that has been running for over 100 years. Not bad for a car built in just eight months but the I.D. R was not content on resting on its laurels.

The I.D. R driven by Romain Dumas then took on the Goodwood Festival of speed in the UK three weeks later, setting a new record-breaking lap for electric cars with a time of just 43.83 seconds. This reaffirmed that the I.D R racing car is starting to become a force to reckon with on time trial circuits.

Fast forward to March 2019 and the I.D. R had it sights set on another record, this time the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Having received a few design adjustments and fine tuning over a five-month period, Romain Dumas was gearing up for another record-breaking run.

The previous record was held by the NextEV Nio eP9 which was able to complete the 12.9-mile track in just 7 minutes and 5.12 seconds.  With the I.D. R batteries and electric motor now optimised to take on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, Ramon Dumas was able to smash the previous record for the fastest lap by an electric vehicle.  With a time of 6 minutes 5.336 seconds, it beat the previous record by over 40 seconds. That’s faster than the V12 powered Lamborghini Aventador SVJ by nearly 40 seconds.

This makes for an impressive record-breaking run from the all-electric I.D. R and Volkswagen wants to keep that run going. On the 4th of July, the 2019 Goodwood festival will begin and the I.D. R will be set to defend its record-breaking title run from 2018. Romain Dumas will once again be behind the wheel in hope to equal or set a brand-new record and we wish him the best of luck.

The I.D. R is a reminder that electric vehicles can be impressive and exciting and while the I.D. R is a racing vehicle, the technology is adapted from what you can find in a normal electric vehicle such as the e-Golf.
