We are only a couple of weeks into the new year and this got us thinking about what 2020 has instore for Volkswagen. After much discussion amongst our team, here are our Top 5 things we are looking forward to seeing this year:
Pre-orders for the ID. 3 have completely sold out amid much anticipation for the first all-electric hot hatch in Volkswagens new ID. range. Over the years, we have seen a number of concepts and prototypes with the ID moniker but 2020 will finally see the first of the ID range to hit the roads. The ID. 3 is crammed with so much new technology that we can’t wait to see them on the roads and in showrooms delivering upon the promise of electric vehicles.
The T-Roc is already a fun SUV but towards the end of last year, the T-Roc Cabriolet was unveiled with a focus on delivering a fun convertible that could deliver the performance that SUV’s bring to the table. The T-Roc Cabriolet’s design means that you can explore much more in the same way you would with a normal SUV but are able to do it in style and comfort (especially on the days where the weather is beautiful). The front-wheel-drive T-Roc Cabriolet will be on sale later this year in time for the warmer weather.
Electric vehicle infrastructure continues to grow at a rapid pace as more and more people make the switch to electric vehicles. Last year, Tesco’s announced a partnership with Pod Point to develop 2,400 EV charging bays at 600 stores over three years. With a much bigger selection of electric vehicles at affordable pricing, the infrastructure will continue to grow rapidly making the purchase of an e-Golf, e-Up and ID. 3 a more viable option for people looking to switch to electric vehicles.
The Geneva Motor show, IAA Frankfurt Motor and Los Angles Motor show were packed full of new announcements and world premieres for upcoming Volkswagen models. As Volkswagen ramps up its production of electric vehicles, we anticipate that there will be plenty of new announcements to come this year. It is also a great opportunity to see what Volkswagen has in store for us in the following year. Thankfully we don’t have to wait too long for possible new announcements as the 2020 Geneva Motor Show starts on March 5th.
5. The return of the Volkswagen Up!
The award-winning Up will be returning to the Volkswagen range with a bang. The new Up! will be given the GTI treatment and for those who want even more performance, there Up will be getting an R-Line trim as well. The new Up! will retain the original design but will feature the new VW logo, 17-inch alloy wheels with low profile tyres and Jacara checked fabric (which originally featured on the original Golf GTI).
The Up! GTI will also have a flat-bottomed steering wheel and a GTI badged gear stick. Performance-wise, the Up! GTI will have a transversely mounted turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine capable of 113bhp (nearly double that of the standard Up!). With a 0-62 mph in 8.8 seconds and 122mph top speed, the Up! GTI is definitely something we are excited about in 2020.
These are our top 5 things we are looking forward to this year but more importantly, what are you looking forward to from Volkswagen in 2020?
