What is Motability?  

The Motability Scheme is a charity-operated scheme that enables people with disabilities to exchange their mobility allowance to lease a new car, scooter, or powered wheelchair. 

It is an affordable and convenient way for disabled people to get mobile. By joining the scheme, you gain increased freedom and independence plus the thrill of having your own brand-new vehicle. 

Am I eligible to join the Motability Scheme? 

Checking your eligibility for the Mobility scheme is quick and easy.  If you receive one of the Motability allowances below and have at least 12 months award length remaining, you can join the scheme.  

Eligible benefits are as follows: 

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA) 
  • Enhanced Rate Mobility Components of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP). 
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS) 
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment

How do I apply to the Motability Scheme to lease a vehicle? 

If you are receiving one of the Motability benefits mentioned above, then you are eligible. Visit one of our branches and speak with one of our specialists. They will be able to go through the application, advise you on available vehicles, costs, and additional benefits of being on the Motability scheme.

How much does leasing through the Scheme cost?

This will be dependent on the amount of benefit you receive along with the vehicle that you choose.  Our Motability specialists can guide you through the various pricing options that are available on the scheme.  

How do Motability Operations collect the payments? 

Motability Operations Ltd will receive your 4 weekly payments for the lease agreement directly from the relevant benefits agency.  Our advisors will be able to outline this further for you when setting up your Motability agreement.  

What is the Personal Independence Payment? 

Person Independence Payment or PIP is the new benefit introduced by the Government, will replace DLA for disabled people aged between 16-64, even if you currently have an ‘indefinite’ or ‘lifetime’ award. Disabled children will continue to receive DLA until they reach the age of 16. DLA will also continue to be available for those aged 65 or over on 8 April 2013 (on 20 June 2016 in Northern Ireland). 

If you receive the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement or Armed Forces Independence Payment, you will not be affected by this new allowance.

Do I have to be the driver of my Motability Scheme car? 

No, if you do not drive, the Motability scheme can still help get you mobile with the ability to have three named drivers of your vehicle. You can name a friend, family member, or carer who can then be applied to the insurance. 

How do I update my nominated drivers? 

Our experts can help you with this or you can call the Motability scheme directly and they will help you change the named drivers on your insurance. Just bear in mind that all named drivers are subject to standard Motability policies regardless of when you take on your lease. Only permitted drivers who meet the eligibility criteria will show on the certificate of Motor Insurance for your vehicle. 

How often does my Motability car need to be serviced? 

You should follow the advice and recommendations that the manufacturer provides although it can vary depending on the make and model as well as its mileage and amount of time you have had the vehicle. It is worth referring to your vehicle manual and service book.  

How do you cancel a Motability car lease? 

In the event you need to cancel your Motability lease, you can call the Motability Customer Service team on 0300 456 4566. They will look at and review your change in circumstances before canceling the lease. There is a £250 Motability administration fee to cover their cost and it will also mean waiving your right to a Good Condition Bonus. Upon the return of your vehicle, your Advance Payment may be refunded to you on a pro-rata basis. However, if you cancel more than three times in seven years, your eligibility may be affected. What happens at the end of my Motability agreement? 

As you come to the end of your Motability agreement, Motability will send you a guide to leasing another vehicle along with a car price guide. You will have the option to select another vehicle to lease on the Motability scheme or explore the option of keeping your existing vehicle for longer. In the event you return your Motability vehicles, your full allowance should be reinstated.
